The 1st World Punjabi Conference was held in Lahore from April 25-28, 1986. A large of delegates participated from all provinces in Pakistan and some eminent scholars from India also took part. The deliberations spread over 3 days and the following declarations were formulated.
Punjabi is the language of great Sufi poets and about 70% of Pakistanis but unfortunately it has been neglected by all successive governments, and needs to be given due importance.
It was resolved that Punjabi should be recognized at all levels and given the rightful place as one of the national languages of Pakistan.
It was also resolved that as much as possible, conference will be held in Pakistan, India and all over the world.
