About WPC
Who we are and what we do.

An Introduction

World Punjabi Congress (WPC) is an organization of Punjabi language writers, intellectuals, journalists and researchers working since 1986 with hundreds of its member’s world over. Its Head Office is in Lahore, Pakistan and there are Regional Chapters in Different countries. It has contributed immensely for the promotion of Punjabi Language and Culture and world peace especially for good relations between Pakistan and India. WPC also works for the promotion of all National languages of Pakistan and respective cultures.

Our Objectives

World Punjabi Congress works with the following aims and objectives:

  • 1.

    For establishing peace and tranquility world over and especially between Pakistan and India.

  • 2.

    Intellectual endeavor against terrorism, extremism and fundamentalism.

  • 3.

    Striving for the survival, and promotion of Punjabi and other national languages of Pakistan.

  • 4.

    Promotion of the culture of tolerance, harmony and patience for listening each other.

  • 5.

    Introduction of the message of love, peace, and tolerance of mysticism.

  • 6.

    Protection of the basic human rights.

  • 7.

    Promotion of Punjab’s culture, literature, traditions and arts.

  • 8.

    Bringing the Punjabi social and cultural norms at par with the needs of the modern times.

  • 9.

    WPC will provide a platform for dialogue to the researchers and intellectuals working for the promotion of all National languages of Pakistan.

  • 10.

    Linkages between Punjabi writers, artists and intellectuals and the writers, artists and intellectuals of other languages of the world.

  • 11.

    Making use of fast emerging new media for the promotion of local values and culture.

  • 12.

    In Pakistan, we will struggle for the recognition of Punjabi language as medium of instruction and establishing a Punjabi University.

  • 13.

    Permanent linkages between the writers, poets, intellectuals and academics of the sub-continent.

Achievements

During 1986 – 2008 World Punjabi Congress (WPC) arranged more than two dozen International Conferences in Pakistan, India, U.K., USA, Canada, Austria, France, Sweden and many other countries.

WPC has arranged literary, cultural, Sufism and peace Conferences in Pakistan.

For the first time in Pakistan’s history, the Chief Minister of India Punjab Capt. Amrinder Sing and Chief Minister of Haryana State Mr. Om Parkash Chutala visited Pakistani Punjab on the request of WPC. Chief Minister of Pakistani Punjab also visited Indian Punjab.

WPC also arranged International Conference on Waris Shah, Shah Hussain and Amrita Pritam.

Different research papers and articles written on Punjabi poetry, mystics and peace were published.

Dozens of cultural and music shows were arranged in Pakistan, India and U.K.

Future Planning

For the establishment of Punjab University in Pakistan documentation is complete. Efforts are being made for achieving proper land and funds for it.
Many other international Conferences are in offing.
WPC intends to continue dialogue for peace, academics and culture actively.
Many projects are in hand for the promotion of love message of Sufism.
Many plans are afoot for the enhancement of mutual contact and collaboration between Punjabi speaking people of the world.

Organizational Structure

  • World Punjabi Congress (WPC) was established in 1986 by the world renowned author, poet and peace lover writer, intellectual Fakhar Zaman. He is still working as its founder Chairman.
  • WPC was honoured with the highest Indian literary award “Shiromani Sahitik Literacy Award” for its Chairman Fakhar Zaman in 2008, at the same time Pakistan Government recognized his services for Punjabi literature by awarding him Hilal-i-Imtiaz.
  • WPC has above 500 members in Pakistan and hundreds of WPC chapters all over the world.
  • Its office bearers are: Chairman, Senior Vice-Chairman, two Vice Presidents, General Secretary, Additional General Secretary, Joint Secretary, Finance Secretary, Information Secretary, Coordinating Secretary and an Executive Committee of ten (10) members. In addition there is an Advisory Committee comprising thirty (30) members.
  • WPC members and office bearers have been bearing all the expenses of its programmes themselves. But in 2008 it was decided that WPC will expand the circle of its activities and run itself as a NGO. Now, as a registered body WPC will also accept donations from the friends and donors.
